Hours: Museum open Wednesday through Friday, 10am to noon and 2 to 6pm; weekends, 11am to 6pm

The Maison Fournaise is known to art lovers as the place where Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted The Luncheon of the Boating Party in 1881. Overlooking the Seine from the scenic Ile des Impressionnistes, the restaurant and hotel of the Maison Fournaise were at the heart of the action, with painters documenting the lively riverside atmosphere much in the way modern paparazzi hover outside the latest trendy Parisian hotspots. After falling into ruin in the early 20th century, La Fournaise became a listed monument in 1982 and reopened its restaurant and new museum in the 1990s after being restored to its former glory. The museum doesn’t own any major Impressionist paintings, but has regular expositions on the spirit of the Impressionist period (and they sell traditional straw bowler hats).
