The latest addition to the Red Capital rostrum, the Ranch moves away from the Communist-capitalist contradiction of the Club and Residence and focuses on the wilder days of old, when the Manchu emperors tried to reclaim their roots with hunting lodges and mountain retreats, as at Chengde (see p. 220).
Arural and rustic retreat is the theme here, although the luxury offered could hardly be described as roughing it. The Ranch enjoys a beautiful location out by the wild wall at Huairou and has 10 stone villas, the better ones with roof terraces to enjoy the seldom-seen Beijing spectacle of the stars.
There’s also a Tibetan-style spa, a cigar bar and a good restaurant – some ranch! You can easily explore the wall on foot from here, but there are also bikes for rent (¥30 per day). To get here from Beijing there is a 10 amshuttle from the Red Capital Residence (see above).
