Quito Rhymer is the BVI’s most famous reggae singer. He is also an entrepreneur, owning both a popular beachfront restaurant and a boutique hotel (see page 74). The restaurant, on the beach, is an oversized beach shack with an indoor dining area and tables on the covered terrace. At night, there are candles on the tables and the service is slow and unhurried. The menu is Caribbean, but with international touches. You can start with conch fritters or a roasted tomato-onion salad. Baby back ribs, steaks and piña colada chicken are popular entrées, as are blackened tuna with tropical salsa, and the seafood combo. Wednesday night is fish fry night, a traditional BVI affair, where the fish is grilled and the chicken barbecued. It includes salads and French fries for a set price. Sunday night is roti night. You can’t help but notice that the bar is the focal point of the restaurant. Many customers spend their evening at the bar enjoying the appetizers and beer. The treat is Quito Rhymer, who performs here solo on Tuesday and Thursday (from 8:30 pm) and with his reggae band, The Edge, on Friday and Saturday from 9:30. The reggae band plays without Quito when he is on tour. If you enjoy reggae music, pick up some of Quito’s CDs. Informal.
