This hotel sits high on the cliffs overlooking its own private beach on Christian Bay. You have to visit this one-of-akind resort to really appreciate it. It has an atmosphere all its own, but it’s hard to define exactly where it stems from. Maybe it’s the sometimes misty views overlooking the ocean and beach from the terraced rooms and cottages. Maybe it’s the people who work there, they certainly seem to be happier than most hotel staff, at the least the ones I’ve run into over the past years. Maybe it’s the South Shore – everything is special on the South Shore. The facilities at the Reefs are outstanding, as they should be for a resort of this class and the amount of money that’s been spent on it. Much smaller than its glitzier neighbors and competitors, it comprises only 67 units, making for a quieter, more intimate hotel. Small as it is, it boasts three restaurants, catering to tastes as varied as you can imagine. There’s also a fitness center, two allweather tennis courts, complimentary kayaking a great feature, considering its location on the South Shore, and you can rent snorkeling equipment and mountain bikes on the property. Watersports and golf can be arranged by the hotel staff; just give them a little advance notice. The resort comes highly recommended, by me, but it’s expensive. Rates start at around $ 240 for a double off-season and go up from there, but they do include a MAP dining plan, and you get exactly what you pay for: a quality vacation to remember.
