As long as you’re in nature mode, stop by the Bubali Plas Bird Sanctuary to spy on local and migratory species that live and breed in the marshy vegetation around two man-made lakes. You can get into the area at any time, but the birds are most active just after sunrise and around sunset.
Look for a dirt access road (marked pubaliplas) to the observation tower. The road is about a mile north of town on Irausquin Boulevard. At the busy intersection near the Wyndham Beach Resort, turn east toward the big red windmill and watch for the dirt road on your right within 200 yards.
The observation tower is visible several hundred yards farther along. A climb to the covered deck allows you a good view of the interconnected lakes and lush greenery where blue heron, egrets, ducks, terns and up to 80 other species of birds feed. There are no signs to help you identify what you’re looking at, so bring a birdwatchers’ book if you want to know. No charge, no set hours, no phone.
