Oahu's North Shore

Oahu’s North Shore

Oahu’s North Shore takes in the northern portion of the island, from Haleiwa northeastward to Kaihalulu Beach. It is an area that is practically synonymous with surfing, home to the famous “Banzai Pipeline” and other equally spectacular surfbreaks at Sunset Beach, Ehukai Beach and Waimea Bay. It is also a popular vacation spot, notable for its gorgeous sunsets.

Haleiwa

Haleiwa, the “Gateway to the North Shore,” is situated at the southwest end of North Shore’s coastal stretch, and is the first town to be reached when approaching from Central Oahu. This is an old sugar plantation town, small, but not surprisingly the largest population center on the North Shore, bustling with an assortment of boutiques, galleries and shops—including several surf shops—and health food stores, restaurants and eateries. Two of the island’s most famous “shave ice” stalls, Matsumoto’s and Aoki’s, are also located here.

Oahu’s North Shore Beaches

At Haleiwa are Haleiwa Ali’i Beach, a long, wide, sandy beach, fronted by a coral reef, where you can watch world-class surfers ride the waves; Haleiwa Beach Park, a narrow, palm-fringed beach, also bordered by coral, with good swimming and surfing possibilities; and Kaiaka State Recreation Area, with a small, sandy beach, punctuated with coral.

Northeastward are some of the North Shore’s better known beaches, among them Kawailoa Beach, itself made up of two beach sections, Laniakea and Chun’s Reef, both popular surfing spots; Waimea Bay Beach Park, a beautiful, crescent-shaped beach, one of the most popular on the North Shore, which spills over into a picture-perfect aquamarine bay; and Pupukea Beach Park, with a small, sandy beach area, surrounded by lava, tide pools and a coral reef. Two other beaches, the most famous on the North Shore and practically places of pilgrimage for surfers the world over, are Ehukai Beach Park, home to the spectacular “Banzai Pipeline,” Hawaii’s most renowned surf wave; and Sunset Beach Park, a long, palm-fringed, sandy beach, bordered by a coral reef just offshore, and a surfing mecca of sorts.

Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay lies at the northeast end of the North Shore, some 4 miles from Sunset Beach. Its princpal anchor is the posh Turtle Bay Hilton and Golf Club, situated on Kuilima Cove, fronting on a small, sandy beach. This is the North Shore’s only luxury resort.
