Kahului

Kahului

Kahului, together with the adjoining city of Wailuku, is the commercial center of Maui, with most of the island’s shops, shopping centers, restaurants and other facilities located there, mostly concentrated on Ka’ahumanu Avenue, the city’s main street, which runs directly east-west and northeast-southwest through the heart of the city. Kahului is also Maui’s only deep-water port, from where all of the island’s sugar and pineapples are shipped and where most of the freighters and cruise ships bound for Maui arrive, docking in the Kahului Harbor. Besides which, Maui’s main airport, the Kahului Airport, is situated just to the east of the city, at the end of Keolani Place, a little over 2 miles from the center of town.

Wailuku

Wailuku, adjoining to the west of Kahului, is the seat of Maui County (which includes the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kaho’olawe). Wailuku is also an historic town, with several old, historic buildings still there, mostly concentrated in its designated Historical District, on High, Market and Vineyard streets. The Maui Zoological and Botanical Gardens are also located in Wailuku.

Iao Valley

Iao Valley, which is situated just over 2 miles west of Wailuku, is perhaps the principal attraction in Central Maui. It is a lush valley that has in it the Iao Needle, a moss-covered stone spire that rises some 1,200 feet vertically from the valley floor (2,250 feet above sea level). The Iao Needle is part of the 4-acre Iao Valley State Park, which also has a trail that loops through it, offering visitors abundant opportunities to view the Iao Needle and explore the surrounding area, crisscrossed by streams and dotted with natural pools and guava trees and wild, yellow ginger.
