Prince William Sound, Whittier, Valdez, Cordova
Prince William SoundPrince William Sound lies just to the south of Anchorage, with Whittier at the head of it. It takes in approximately 10,000 square miles of protected channels, waterways, islands, fjords and some 10,000 glaciers, including the stunning Columbia Glacier, four miles wide and 200 feet high at its face. This is also where a host of sea creatures such as whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters and porpoise literally hang out, and where mountain goats, sheep, deer and bears can be found on the mainland, just in from the sound. Organized day cruises and charters offer access to several of the sound’s most astonishing scenic vistas and sights.WhittierWhittier is the principal town on Prince William Sound, and the departure point for most cruises, charters and aerial sightseeing trips of the sound. It is a charming little coastal town, rich in World War II history, from where you can take in the glacial splendors of the sound, and even rent a kayak to explore some of its coves, beaches and tide pools.ValdezThis is the other main community on the sound, located at its northeast end. It offers abundant opportunities for outdoor pursuits, such as rafting, kayaking, glacier trekking and skiing. It also offers good sightseeing, with amazing waterfalls and huge salmon runs nearby. In town, you can visit museums rich in regional history.CordovaCordova is located near the southeast corner of Prince William Sound, and people come from near and far to see its Million Dollar Bridge. But there’s more to Cordova: salmon fishing, sightseeing, viewing glaciers, watching shorebirds in Hartney Bay, and exploring the offshore Orca Inlet and Copper River Delta.
