Sighseeing in Chiang Rai

Temples

Wat Phra Sing, on Singhakhlai Road near the town hall was home to a major Buddha statue, the Phra Buddha Sihing, which is now enshrined in Chiang Mai. Aspecial feature is the Lanna-style ubosot, the hall where new monks are ordained and other important ceremonies take place, and the wooden door panels carved by contemporary Chiang Rai craftsmen.

Wat Phra Kaew on Trairat Road was home of the Emerald Buddha, which is now enshrined in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. The temple also houses a 700-year-old bronze statue, Phra Chao Lan Thong, which is in the Chiang Saen-style ubosot.

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, on Doi Chom Thong, on the bank of the Kok River, contains an ancient holy relic pre-dating the time when King Mengrai built Chiang Rai.

Nam Tok Khun Kon Forest Park

This is the home of Chiang Rai’s highest and most scenic waterfall, the Khun Kon, which cascades from a height of more than 70 meters. To get there, take Highway 1, the Chiang Rai, to Phayao road, for 15 kilometers and turn right at the park sign for another 17 kilometers. Then there is a 30-minute walk, which has several pleasant spots to rest.

Oub Kham Museum

Located near Den Ha market, one kilometer from the town center of town, the museum houses many items used by the Lanna royal courts. This includes numerous items of jewelry and lacquer ware from northern Thailand, northeast Myanmar, southwest China and Vietnam.

Ho Watthanatham Nithat

Located at the former town hall, Ho Watthanatham Nithat is a museum exhibiting ancient artifacts and written records on history and literature as well as exhibits on royal activities by the late Princess Mother.
