On the northwest corner of the Városliget, just down from the city circus and zoo, is the Gundel Restaurant, open Mon-Fri noon to 3 pm and 7 pm to midnight. Prices range from 5,000 to 8,000 HUF per entrée. Café entrées run about 1,500 HUF. Presidents, prime ministers, movie stars, royalty, and the jet set have all dined at its tables. Jacket and tie with a reservation are needed for dinner. The famed Gundel palacsinta (Hungarian pancake,Gundel style), first created by Károly Gundel in the early 1900s, is a heady adventure for the palate, enriched with rum, raisins, lime rinds, and walnuts, basted in a creamy chocolate sauce, then mildly oven-fried. Some say this place is pricey, but there is no doubt you get the best.
