Naschmarkt Area

Naschmarkt Area & Grimmaische Straße

Behind the Altes Rathaus is the Naschmarkt, with a statue (1903) of a young Goethe in front of the Alte Börse (Old Commodities Trading Exchange). The building was completed in 1687 as the first major Baroque structure in Leipzig. The beautifully decorated façade is in perfect restored condition. The large former trading hall can be rented for private functions, but the interior is not open for general viewing.

Goethe’s stare is fixed on the Mädler-Passage, Leipzig’s most magnificent passage. Here are several stylish shops and restaurants. The most famous is the Auerbachs Keller, a drinking hall and restaurant that is the setting of a key scene in Goethe’s most famous work, Faust. Goethe himself was a frequent visitor and it is still the destination of many visitors to Leipzig. Large statues of Mephisto and Dr Faust mark the entrance to the cellars. This is Leipzig – despite the glamour of the establishments in the Mädler-Passage, in an adjacent and directly linked passage cheap socks and underwear can be bought from stalls.

One of the most interesting museums in all of Germany is the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig (Forum of Contemporary History), Grimmaische Straße 6. The museum displays the history of the two post-World War II Germanys, with special emphasis on the history of dictatorship, opposition, and resistance in the Soviet Occupation Zone and in the German Democratic Republic during 40 years of German division. In addition to contemporary items, there is also a very impressive range of multimedia presentations. Particularly interesting is video footage showing how the same events were portrayed on news programs in the former East and West. Several audio recordings of famous speeches are available to complement the hundreds of photos and documents on display. Most of the information is in German, but English audio guides are available. This museum is far more impressive and interesting than any of the more widely advertised, and often pricey, competition in Berlin.

Less famous but older and larger than the Thomas Church is the Nikolaikirche, Nikolaikirchhof 3. The Gothic chancel and west towers date from the 14th century, while the triple nave and galleries are early 16th century. The central tower was completed in 1555. The classical interior dates from the late 18th century and is currently being restored. The slender white pillars resemble palm trees and end in light green leaves. The rest of the ceiling is coffered in light pink stucco flowers. The organ is one of the largest in Germany.
