Nördlingen
Nördlingen is even farther from the highways and attracts visibly fewer tourists than Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl. It is once again a completely walled-in town but, interestingly, the town is almost completely round. The town’s written history started in 898 and it became a Free Imperial City in 1215. The town population was halved in the Thirty Years’War and it never recovered its former important position. It became part of Bavaria in 1803.
Sightseeing in Nördlingen
In Nördlingen, the main sights are once again the interesting old houses. Here, in contrast to Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl, it is fairly easy to see decaying and less well maintained buildings in the back streets. The 15th-century St Georgskirche (St George’s Church), Am Obstmarkt, has a 295-ft tower. This tower, virtually in the center of town, gives the best view on the Romantic Road, as the interesting circular Old Town and the concentric development are clearly visible. The interior of the church itself is bright and has intricate vaulting. The nearby Rathaus (Town Hall) is the oldest stone building in town. Parts date from the 13th century, but the building was significantly altered around 1500. The Stadtmauer (Town Walls) are the only ones in Germany that are still fully accessible. It is possible to walk around the town, mostly under cover, on the wall and pass 11 watchtowers and five gates in the process.
