A Brief History of Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf has a history going back to at least 1288, but it was during the reign of Elector Johann Wilhelm (1679-1716), locally known as Jan Wellem, that the city came to prominence. He attracted artists to his court and transformed the town. A century later, it was briefly the capital of the French-created Grand Duchy of Berg, ruled by Jerome Bonaparte, but became part of Prussia from 1815.

During World War II, Düsseldorf was bombed almost out of existence. After the war, the town rebuilt in a modern and generally more elegant style than many other cities that made a similar decision not to restore the old buildings. Only a small part of the old city survived or was restored in later years.
