Seefeld

Tucked up in a forest-bordered valley 25 km northwest of Innsbruck, near the German frontier and its Zügspitze mountain, Seefeld – or Sevelt, as it was called in the 11th century – enjoys an enviable locale midway between Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The village first became a place of pilgrimage after the “miracle of the host” incident on Easter of 1384, when in the parish church an arrogant knight ate a consecrated communion wafer, causing the ground to shake and his feet to sink. Today’s pilgrims, however, come in pursuit of more hedonistic pleasures.

Seefeld Holiday Region

The Seefeld Holiday Region – a conglomerate comprising Seefeld and four neighboring villages – enjoys a Europe- wide reputation as one of Austria’s best village resorts. However, the action here is not the turbo-charged, adrenaline-pumping sort found elsewhere; it is instead a low-key, highbrow hum of soothing relaxation. Visitors come here, above all, to breathe. Walking, biking, horseback riding, golf, and fishing are the town’s most popular pursuits. In the winter, skiers come for easy downhill runs, winter walking paths, and cross-country trails that were twice a venue for the Olympic Winter Games. Active guests also enjoy an expansive sports center, blessed with multiple swimming pools and a lake-top ice rink out front. The elegant little Seekapl church lies across the lake. It was surrounded by water when first erected in 1666.
