Introduction

Córdoba is a lovely city, at once historic, progressive, modern, dynamic and vibrant, but with deep colonial roots. In fact, it has one of the most impressive ensembles of colonial architecture in Argentina, and an absolutely charming historic district, with pedestrian walkways overhung with leafy canopies and dotted with sidewalk cafés, together with scores of well-preserved monuments and other historic relics such as buildings of the Roman Catholic Church and Manzana Jesuítica (Jesuit Block), the last of which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has its fair share of museums, galleries, restaurants, cafés, shops, boutiques, bars, pubs and other nightlife venues, and is also home to Argentina's oldest university, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, founded in 1613 by the Jesuit Order, which has earned the city its nickname, La Docta – "The Learned Lady."

Location

Córdoba is the capital of the province of the same name, situated in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas on the Suquía River, more or less in the geographical center of Argentina. It lies approximately 435 miles (700 km) northwest of Buenos Aires.
