Dominating the city from the southern end of the Mönchberg, the Höhensalzburg Fortress, or festung, should rank at the top of any visitor’s must-see list. The site first saw construction in 11th century, and that original castle underwent 600 years of reconstruction and expansion thereafter.

Mozart’s Geburtshaus, or birthplace, a yellow house, is recognizable for its tourist throngs, all awaiting their turns to visit the museum inside. Memorabilia here centers on the composer's music and possessions. There's an outdoor cafe in front of the house-cum-museum.

Located in the lovely little village of Halstatt, the Pfarrkirche and its crowded cemetery offer in them an extraordinary visit. In fact, this is a cemetery so crowded that burial here is only temporary. After approximately 10 years of decomposition time, the bones are cleared out and – after the town gravedigger decoratively paints the skull – filed away in the Beinhaus.

West of the city, the Salzburg Freilicht Museum, or outdoor museum, displays 60 original farm building, some of them 500 years old. Farmyards, handicraft demonstrations, and a great playground entertain.

The Salzburg Zoo is situated at the foot of the Hellbrunner Mountain, between the mountain cliffside and the high flood plains. It houses over 800 animals, with the diversity extending to Africa, Eurasia and the Americas. Gift shop and restaurant on premises.
