Kraków Travel Guide

Introduction

Kraków has history, culture and royalty written all over it: It has one of Poland's most famous castles, Wawel, perched on an equally famous hill in the center of town. It has deep associations with one of the most charismatic heads of the Catholic church, Pope John Paul II – who was born in nearby Wadowice and for 14 years remained the archbishop of Kraków – and a legacy tied to one of Europe's most visible and storied Jewish communities. It has roots in the Stone Age, and a treasure trove of relics still there from centuries past, with fabulous cathedrals and basilicas, and public squares adorned with Polish heroes on horseback. It has world-class museums and galleries, grand-old performing arts venues, some of the oldest universities in Europe, and a long-established tradition of art, music and literature. There are colorful markets in the city, atmospheric cafés and restaurants where hearty soups and kielbasa are washed down with local brews, lively jazz clubs and wildly popular film festivals, and a "royal road" that runs through the center of the city. Ultimately, Kraków can fairly be described as the cultural heart of Poland, and a huge draw for Poles, pilgrims, foreign tourists and anyone searching for a regal slice of Poland.
