The Town
Although it was probably first settled in fifth century, Vaduz (or Faduzes) is first mentioned in historical texts dating from the 12th century. Today’s city, the capital of the country, spreads out along the Rhine Valley between the eastern riverbank and the western foothills of The Alps. One major road, Route 16, runs through Vaduz and the length of Liechtenstein. However, Route 16 is rarely marked as such. Instead, the street signs change names every few blocks: Landstrasse, Herrengasse, Aulestrasse, Heiligkreuz, Austrasse, etc. You get the idea. In the text that follows, we’ll refer to Route 16 as the “main road.” When you’re in town, it’s hard to miss.
Visitors’ first stop should be the small pedestrian area at the town’s center. Wander along the Städtle between the art museum, the tourist office, and the many surrounding shops. Gazing down from the hill above is Liechtenstein’s landmark castle, which, because it’s the private residence of the royal family, is not open to the public.
