The Sights of Vaduz

The Sights

For a town this tiny, in a country this small, Vaduz has far more than its share of museums. Several collections stand out. The National Art Museum Liechtenstein, housed in a striking modern building in the center, houses the substantial Collections of the Prince. Exhibits include works by diverse masters, including Rembrandt, Rubens, and Picasso.

Winter-sports fans should visit the Ski Museum Vaduz, a lovingly cared-for collection assembled by Noldi Beck. Mr. Beck was equipment manager for Hanni Wenzel, a skier who found herself Liechtenstein’s darling after bringing home the gold medal from the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid. His collection is considerable, and his connections apparent.

In the Hofkellerei des Fürsten von Liechtenstein, otherwise known as the prince’s wine cellars, visitors can sample and purchase local wines. (If you do the first, the latter is customary – even if you just buy one small bottle.) The surrounding vineyard is planted with 9.9 acres of Pinot Noir grapes and, yes, it is actually owned by the royal family. A path through the vineyard leads to the Restaurant Torkel. In summer, the Vaduz City Train departs the main bus station each day at 4:30 pm for a 30-minute tour of town. The tourist office also arranges guided tours through Vaduz and around Liechtenstein. Regularly scheduled, hour-long walking tours depart Monday through Friday at 2 pm from the bus terminal desk. Private guides can be arranged through the tourist office.

Those seeking outdoor recreation in Vaduz hike, bike, and ride into and along the nearby mountains. Bikers and skaters enjoy 90 km of posted trails, rolling the length of the nation in an easy stretch along the Rhine. More difficult mountain-biking trails climb at altitude.

While Vaduz is very much a tourist town, Malbun and Steg – its mountain neighbors – are the local centers for outdoor play. There, adventurers head into the mountains on a 400-km network of hiking and biking trails and ski on 21 km of groomed runs. For more information, see the entries below for Malbun and Steg.
