Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Spa is one of Europe’s largest bathing complexes and one of the top medicinal baths in Hungary. Its warm waters soothe in summer or winter alike, bubbling with currents, whirlpools, and underground jets. Chess tables are laid out at surface level, at the foot of Neo-Classical statues, a Roman patrician’s leisure occupation. The bath dates from 1879, when it was known as Artesian Bath. At the time it was considered a technological breakthrough to reach the hot steaming waters 3,000 feet below the earth’s surface. It still is no mean feat. No expense was spared in building baths equal to the technology. A communal thermal department and outpatients’ hospital (physiotherapy section) were officially added in the 1960s.
Facilities at the bath now include a water chute, underwater aeration bubbling up between your legs, neck massage, and water-jet massage points fitted on the submerged benches which can be supplemented with hand massages and special pampering services.
