While a lot of riding in Hungary is the follow-the-leader type, or a coach ride through open fields, you will usually be asked to ride inside a corral until they are sure of your experience. After that you may be strung along, be given lessons (for a fee), or you may be allowed to range the land. Superb crosscountry rides take you across open fields, through forests, past fields of grain and sunflowers, forging streams and following the horse tracks of the Magyars 1,000 years ago. You must have experience to go on one of these rides, usually backed up with lessons in English-style riding.
Although there are a few stables in Hungary that offer western-style, (see below), generally the horses in this country are used to the English style, which requires that you sit high in the saddle, and use little body pressure on the saddle. However, many schools also offer beginner lessons and there are several tours that will start you off learning the English methods. Bring your own English regalia, for formal instructions. Or, enjoy the Hungarian equine culture. It is risky in high season to show up at a riding center without booking in advance.
