Porte d’Enfer means Gate of Hell, but the lagoon here is calm and lovely, more like paradise than Hades. On D120, just before the road turns west and becomes D122, you’ll find the pebbly beach in a deep cove. On weekends, islanders set up barbecue grills and beach umbrellas and settle in for long days of picnicking, lounging and swimming in the calm water. If you come unprepared, there’s a snack van and picnic tables under nearby trees. Outside the sheltered bay, the water is quite wild, with pounding surf and fierce currents. Take your hiking boots so you can climb to Trou àMadame Coco, a steep drop off one of the cliffs that shelter Porte d’Enfer from the turbulent Atlantic.
