Sightseeing in Saarland
The following two sights are best visited with private transportation and are 40 km (24 miles) from Trier.
The most famous sight in Saarland is the Saarschleife. Here, the River Saar makes a huge 180-degree hairpin loop and for a long stretch flows parallel in opposite directions. The sight is best seen from the viewpoint in Cloef and requires a 15-minute hike through the forest.
Several companies offer boat excursions from Mettlach to the Saarschleife. Round-trips take 90 minutes. Boats operate daily from Easter to October. Details are available from Saarschleife Touristik, Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße 64, 66693 Mettlach.
Mettlach is famous for its Villeroy & Boch ceramics factory, Postfach 1120, 66688 Mettlach, which produces everything from toilet bowls to the most dainty teacups. The firm’s headquarters are in a Baroque former monastery where it also has a Keramikmuseum (Ceramics Museum), with one of the largest private collections of porcelain in Europe. In the complex are large outlet shops selling the firm’s wares at a slight discount. The best bargains are found in the Fundgrube, where odds and ends are sold at huge discounts.
