Hann. Münden Travel Guide

Introduction

Hann. Münden, formally Hannoversch Münden, is an absolute gem of a town, situated in the Weser Valley at the confluence of the Wera and Fulda rivers, where the two join to form the river Weser. It is filled with centuries-old half-timbered and Weser Renaissance buildings, some of them more than 600 years old. It has atmospheric squares and cobbled streets with outdoor cafés and quaint little shops. It also has a lovely Gothic church that holds some interest, as well as an impressive Renaissance town hall, some remnants of the medieval city walls, a 19th-century observation tower that rises above the old town, and Werabrücke, which has the distinction of being the oldest stone bridge in Germany. A Weser Renaissance-style palace, Weifenschloss, further adds to the visitor interest. Besides which, the town is a good base for cycling and hiking trips into the Weser Valley.

Location

Hann. Münden is situated in the north-central German state of Lower Saxony, in the district of Göttingen. From Kassel, which is the nearest city to it, Hann. Münden lies roughly 10 miles (16 km) to the northeast, and from Göttingen, 15 miles (24 km) to the southwest.
