Bremerhaven is 65-km (39 miles) downstream at the mouth of the River Weser. It is not an attractive town, but it has an interesting maritime museum, the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum. It documents the development of the German shipping industry from Roman times to the present. A huge museum with large displays, it is easy to enjoy even if you are not particularly interested in shipping. The prize possession is the 1388 Hansekogge – a merchant ship discovered in the 1960s during harbor excavations. Other items of interest include staterooms from ocean liners, bridges, large-scale models, and navigational instruments. From April to October, eight historic vessels can be inspected in the open-air museum area. The museum is just under two km (1.2 miles) from Bremerhaven station and can be reached on bus lines 502 or 506 (stop Hochschule Bremerhaven).
