You must find a way to see this beautiful place, even if you don’t stay here. It is truly one of the most marvel-ously remarkable spots on earth. You’ll need a four wheel drive vehicle and strong bladder control to make it up the teeth-jarring, rut-riddled half-mile track that passes for a private road to the cottages, but do not miss this experience. At the end of the eternal driveway up the mountain, you find a glorious swimming pool seemingly floating above the earth with the Atlantic in one direction and the Caribbean in the other. Owners Barney and Loye Barnard and their daughter, Amie, live in the home next to the pool, and have created a fabulous retreat for guests on their property. Each of the cottages has 1½ baths, a bedroom with a double bed and a smaller room with two twin-size beds. There’s a complete kitchen, and the Barnards will organize meals to be eaten on their verandah or delivered to the cottage. All electricity and water are supplied by ecologicallysmart solar systems and cisterns. Even telephone messages are transmitted by radio signal. Sheep, vegetables and herbs are raised on the property, which was once a working plantation. More than 60 species of birds have been seen among the flowers and tropical plants that grow abundantly on the grounds. Diving and sightseeing tours can be arranged with operators just down the hill in Soufrière. But you may find that once you’re settled into your mountaintop home, you have no desire or reason to leave.
