Not to be overlooked in Escazú are the plethora of B&Bs, many owned by North Americans. Central Escazú, 900 meters/2,961 feet west of Banco Nacional. Very pleasant.

Villablanca Hotel

Hotel
Room Rates: Colon80 - Colon80
Location: At the edge of the forest

We found the best and most convenient cloud forest hiking opportunities in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve in San Ramón. It receives far fewer visitors than Monteverde and is much closer to San José. Los Angeles offers unspoiled quiet and mystical misty paths up a mountain slope.

Arrange this as a day-trip or overnight excursion with the Villablanca Hotel, located at the edge of the forest. They’ll pick you up in San José and bring you back for about US $80, including breakfast, lunch, transportation and camaraderie. The knowledgeable hotel staff serve as guides.

Vista del Valle Plantation Inn

Hotel
Room Rates: Colon126 - Colon200

Atrue gem of a hotel is the Vista del Valle Plantation Inn located southwest of the Inter-American Highway, 20 minutes north of the airport. Take the first turn after the third bridge and follow the signs. This delightful inn is surrounded by coffee fincas and orange groves bordering the Río Grande Canyon Nature Reserve.

It features sweeping views of the valley, as its name implies. Japanese-style cottages are simple but elegant, with private balconies. The comfort, peace and tranquility they exude is enhanced by lush tropical gardens all around. Delightful.
