The southwest coast of Virgin Gorda has beautiful white cedar trees, turpentine trees with red shiny bark and frangipani trees, as well as 20-foot cactus. Birds include doves, hummingbirds and bananaquits. Devil’s Bay National Park was established in 1964. It includes Little Fort, Big Trunk Bay, Little Trunk Bay, The Crawl, Spring Bay and Devil’s Bay (south of The Baths). It also includes the Coppermine ruins and small offshore islands such as Fallen Jerusalem, Broken Jerusalem and Round Rock. Little Fort is closest to Spanish Town. It is not a beach but is instead made up of piles of massive boulders covered by interesting flora. The old fort that stood there has crumbled away. The area, comprised of 36 acres, is a wildlife sanctuary. The Trunk Bays and Spring Bay have lovely coral sand beaches. Spring Bay is the most attractive of the three. It too has huge boulders that make snorkeling attractive and is less crowded than The Baths. The lawn is popular with picnickers. The Crawl can be reached along a coconut palm-lined path from Spring Bay. It is a natural boulder enclosure once used by fishermen as a corral to keep captured turtles and fish alive. It is an excellent snorkeling spot for beginners. Devil’s Bay has crystal-clear waters and a white sandy beach that is shaded by seagrape trees. It has no watersports rentals, so bring your own gear and food. Fallen Jerusalem, Broken Jerusalem and Round Rock islands provide nesting sites for seabirds such as red-billed and white-tailed tropicbirds, brown boobies, terns, brown pelicans and laughing gulls. Goats once grazed on Fallen Jerusalem but no longer. All three are uninhabited and easily reached by boat.
