At 1,360 feet, Gorda Peak is the highest point on Virgin Gorda. It stands amid 265 acres of Caribbean Dry Forest. The land was donated to the National Parks Trust by conservationist Lawrence Rockefeller in 1974 and was designated as a nature preserve. Since the island gets only 30 inches of rainfall annually, the vegetation grows low to the ground and you’ll see lots of cactus, tamarinds and frangipanis. These have adapted to the dry conditions, as have other plants, which have waxy leaves that prevent water evaporation. Three miles out of Spanish Town, you’ll reach a trail leading to Gorda Park (there are two others, but parking is best here).
The trails are easy to negotiate and the trek should take 30 minutes or so. En route you’ll see a variety of plants and herbs, including bay trees (bay leaves are used in making cologne), black wattle (used to brew medicinal tea), and poison ash.
