The Kohala Coast begins where the Kona Coast ends: at the Waikoloa Resort. The coast comprises some 15 miles of glorious coastline, and is the premier resort area of the Big Island. Several of the island’s finest luxury hotels as well as some of Hawaii’s loveliest beaches are located here. This is also one of the sunniest spots on the island, boasting a virtually-perfect 365 days of sunshine a year!

Waikoloa is the southernmost of the Kohala Coast resorts. It is situated at the head of picturesque Anaeho’omalu and Waiulua bays, approximately 24 miles north of Kailua- Kona. It comprises two luxury resort hotels, the 540-room Waikoloa Beach Marriott and the 1,240-room, sprawling Hilton Waikoloa Village, as well as a couple of luxury condominium complexes. The Hilton Waikoloa Village is especially worth visiting: it has a large shopping complex, an impressive system of waterways consisting of canals and lagoons, with boats and gondolas to ferry guests around, as well as an art museum and extensive tropical grounds and lagoons where abundant exotic birds such as flamingos, parrots and swans roam freely.

One of the premier attractions of the Kohala Coast is Hapuna Beach, located about 7 miles north of Waikoloa Beach Resort. This is one of the loveliest white-sand beaches on the island, comprising approximately 61 acres. It offers good bodyboarding, bodysurfing, swimming and snorkeling possibilities. Also, overlooking the beach is the 350-room Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, nestled on a 32-acre oceanfront estate with an 18-hole golf course. Another resort in the area is the 310-room Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, situated on a lush, 400-acre estate, roughly a mile north of Hapuna Beach, at the head of Kauna’oa Bay and the beautiful white-sand Kauna’oa Beach. The hotel has a 6-Story atrium filled with tropical plants, and also houses the priceless Rockefeller Pacific Rim Art Collection.
