Sightseeing in Kitzbühel

Sightseeing in Kitzbühel

The town of Kitzbühel perches on a hillside terrace below the Hahnenkamm peak. The town’s tourism industry banks on its medieval nucleus, where two wide streets, the Hinterstadt to the west and the Vorstadt to the east, run parallel between the ancient center’s walls. From the town gates run Bichlstrasse to the southeast, Josef Herold Strasse up the mountain to the west, Franz Reisch Strasse to the northwest toward the Schwarzsee, and Josef Pirchl Strasse northeast toward the train station. On the western edge of the center, train tracks divide the old town from the ski slopes and lifts, eventually running north toward the main station and west past the Schwarsee.

Hop aboard the Hahnenkammbahn gondola, which climbs from the western edge of town up to the Hahnenkamm peak; or, cross the valley to the base of the Kitzbüheler Hornbahn, which climbs in two stages to the Kitzbüheler Horn on the east side of town.

  • Old Town Kitzbühel
    • Kitzbühel’s tourist attractions are mostly of the sporting or shopping type, and visitors will spend most of their time here simply wandering the cobblestone streets of the charming walled center. That said, several local churches merit a look. The Katharinenkirche, now a war memorial, is tucked away in the old town center; the 15th-century Pfarrkirche, on a knoll just north of center, has an interesting Baroque interior; and next door, the Liebfrauenkirche harbors a showy display of lace-like stucco.

  • Heimatmuseum
    • Situated in a 13th-century structure that’s Kitzbühel’s oldest house, the Heimatmuseum displays a collection of photos, crafts, and mining tools that tell the story of the town’s history. It’s located at Hinterstadt 32.

  • Bergahnmuseum
    • For those with mechanical interests, the Bergahnmuseum, or cable car museum, documents the history and technology of lift construction – and don’t miss a simulated run down the Streif ski racecourse. The museum is appropriately located at the top station of the Hahnenkammbahn gondola lift.

  • Toni Sailer Home
    • For fans of World Cup skiing, the blue house at Bichlstrasse 10 is the birthplace of Toni Sailer – who, in the 1950s, became a three-time Olympic champion, seven-time World Champion, and hometown Kitzbühel great.

  • Wildpark Tirol
    • Two attractions outside of the town limits will please kids. The Wildpark Tirol is four km south of Kitzbühel along the road to Jochberg. Awalking tour winds through enclosures housing deer, boars, yaks, lynx, marmots, ducks, and ibex, among others.

  • Bauernhausmuseum Hinterobernau
    • Just north of town along the Römerweg, the Bauernhausmuseum Hinterobernau offers a look at a 16th-century traditional farmhouse, furnished, operated, and equipped as it would have been some 400 years ago.
